Back to Work

With Christmas over and a few days to go until new year I am back to working on the sequel to Deadly to Love. I planned on getting back to writing today and completing another chapter but that didn't happen. Instead I thought I'd ease myself back in gently, I mean I have been watching Christmas movies, eating and being around my family for the past week so didn't want to tax my brain too much. To solve this problem I decided to create the map for the new book instead as the story is going to move from Mavera to the Stacana Islands as well.

It took me a lot longer than I thought it would to complete the map as I had to try and decipher my plan (I really should make notes in full sentences so I can understand it anytime and not just when I write it). Once I'd figured out what I'd written I had to come up with a few new place names and try and figure out what should go where on the map in relation to the journey Kai, Serena and a few others are taking. Talk about not straining my brain, it ended up being harder than writing a chapter as I had to consider the whole book rather than just a section of the plan.

Map

I have also been featured on the amazing website The Magic of Words so go check it out, there are some great reads and images on there! http://www.whenwordsbecomemagic.com/mia-hoddell.html

Growing in Confidence - Writing, Acting, Socializing

I have always struggled with confidence, ever since I was little. You know the kid who would sit quietly at the front of the class, sat in the corner at parties or struggled to talk to new people etc? Well that was me. My friends and family would tell you that I have no problem with my confidence and that I am one of the most talkative people when around them, however others who don't know me so well would probably say differently.

Flower

The truth is that I am more confident around friends and family as I feel comfortable being myself with them, I mean who doesn't. Yet in large groups I tend to sit back and observe (comes in handy when writing), therefore leading people who don't know me very well to think I am weird. There are still issues around my family though, for example no one (besides my cats) have ever heard me sing properly. For me there is like a physical wall inside my head creating a barrier and stopping me from doing certain things. I have always found starting new thing (clubs, schools, groups) hard as the prospect of having to meet new people, talk and start at the bottom when others are more knowledgeable scared the hell out of me. This problem has stopped me taking up a few things and also made me incredibly nervous about taking up a career that is so unpredictable.

When I started writing people thought I was stranger than ever. They believed it to be an anti-social job and that I was becoming more of an introvert than I already am. Maybe they are right, I have never enjoyed huge gatherings or talking to people for a long time and being in a family that did was a nightmare but I am happy in my own skin I'm learning slowly to ignore the comments that used to affect me. If I am happy with what I am doing that is all that matters right? And anyway I've found out there is a lot more 'talking' involved with writing than what people think.

Why I Write

I have been asked this question numerous times in the past few years and it has only got worse now I have decided to take a year out of education to focus on my work. Most of the people who question what I do are trying to pressure me into university (even though I haven't ruled it out as an option yet). I just need a break to focus on my own goals and not piles of essays about subjects that are of no interest to me.

I have fought many battles with people who can't understand what I get out of writing or why I would want to follow a career as unpredictable as this one when I could go to uni, get a degree and settle into a normal 9/5 job, before marriage and kids. Yes, I haven't even reached 20 yet and kids have been mentioned!

I have decided to write down all the reasons of why I like to write because of a few things. First of all I am curious about what makes authors write and it is never something I have considered past the point of “it makes me happy.” Secondly I want to let everyone know why I do what I do and hopefully explain to the people doubting my choice that I know what I'm doing (well sort of, I'm still learning). Thirdly I don't want to forget why I started writing and I hope this will give me the boost I need when I am having a bad day and questions are running through my head, which I'd rather not consider.

OK so with that little rant over, here are the reasons as to why I write.

  1. Escapism – For me writing allows me to escape the real world for a period of time. I will shut myself in a room in front of my PC and in that period of time anything goes. There are no rules or limits to what I have to write or do and I love the idea of creating new world. While I am writing it also allows me to channel emotions into my characters and gives me away to express myself. I can't help but be the character while writing (acting habit) and the prospect of being whoever I want to be, even for a split second, is exciting for me.

  2. Passion – From a young age I have loved writing. I started with poetry when I was four and when I got my first poem published in an anthology at the age of 12 my passion grew, especially when I continued to get another published a few years later. My writing just got bigger, more developed and longer as I grew. I love everything about writing - well nearly, I hate editing – but besides that everything from planning, writing, promoting and cover design I would do all day. I can easily spend 12hrs straight writing and I don't regret any time spent doing it. It is one of the things I love most.

  3. Creativity – I have always been more creatively inclined. Yes I am good at academics and I could apply for top universities with the grades I get, but frankly this doesn't interest me in the slightest as I have to spread my efforts across a bigger work load to achieve what I want. I would rather be making up my own stories, pieces of art, photographs etc than studying for an exam or sitting in an office all day. The traditional subjects or 'highly' regarded subjects hold no interest for me and even though people are pressuring me to follow a job which brings status and a high income I want a creative job that will make me happy.
  1. Driven – I am driven to succeed and meet the goals I have set myself. I don't like giving up or failing at stuff I enjoy and because I am so passionate about writing it is driving me even more to continue with it. I want to be my own boss and succeed at something I love, as to me writing doesn't feel like work; I will happily get up every morning without struggle to write.

  2. Happiness – Above all when I am writing I am at my happiest. I could spend hours doing it (which I have on many occasions). If I didn't get pleasure from writing I wouldn't be doing it. I feel lucky that I have found something I enjoy so much at an early age and as long as it continues to bring me the happiness it does, I will keep at it.

I'd love to hear why other authors write as like I said before, it is never something I have considered in much detail.

How Many Lives Does an Author Live?

Deadly to Love Update
I have beaten my computer and finally formatted Deadly to Love! I have been putting off the task for days as  I couldn't face the coding involved but the book is now ready for release on the 29th November after one last check. There is also a cover reveal taking place on the 25th (still time if you want to take part, just contact me via my contact page).

How Many Lives Does an Author Live?

For a few years now I have felt like I have been living at least a triple life. I'm not sure what it is like for other authors but I am constantly trying to balance tasks from my separate lives. Even though I love what I do and wouldn't change it for the world when it comes to switching between identities, I feel like I have even more than James Bond!

There are three main identities that I live under:

1. Normal Me – Family Life, College, Friends etc.

2. Author – Writing, Characters, Promoting, Formatting, Blogging etc.

3. Reviewer – Reading, Reviewing, Blogging etc.

Even though these lives interlink and blend into one I feel that what I do in each is technically a separate part of me.

While I'm just me I'm talking about normal issues, getting dragged to places I don't want to be and spending time with my friends and family. This is probably my social side (well as social as I get anyway). I also have to go to college, which leaves me with a load of work and distracts me from my novels… I won't get into that right now though. This side of myself is easy to lose amongst the chaos in my head, especially when the writer in me takes over.

When I am living in my author's world, anything goes. I find it incredibly hard to switch off once I am in this place as my mind is constantly thinking about possible novels or what is going to happen next in a series. Also I prefer to blend into the background instead of being the centre of attention so I’m always observing my surroundings for things that could be good in a novel.

While I’m writing, I guess you could say I'm living my characters’ lives too as I am technically creating what happens, what they think or do. However there are other sides to this version of myself. Due to the fact I am self-published I have to do everything, so under the identity of author there is also; publicist, blogger, graphic designer, formatter (probably not the official title) and editor (although I do outsource for this too). This is probably the identity I live under most as I love all aspects of writing. However, because it's not a normal job where you'd leave for the day at 5pm, my work follows me wherever I go, which make it increasingly difficult to stop due to the ideas in my head.

Finally there is also the reviewer side of myself. When I am not writing I love relaxing with a good book and a hot chocolate. This side of me is probably the most distant though as I like to keep everything to do with reviewing separate from my work. As well as this, because I read so many books I guess you could say I am living or experiencing that character's life too as I follow them throughout the novel and get immersed in the story.

Overall I would say that authors lead hundreds of lives and it only grows with the amount of books they read and write. Sometimes it gets confusing and I find myself asking "OK who am I now?" but I wouldn't change it for anything. I enjoy every aspect of being an author and I'm only growing to become more certain that this is what I want to do. If all fails though, at least I'd have a career as a spy...

New Description and Title Reveal!

As mentioned before in my last post I had a last minute change of the title. I am still keeping The Elementals as the series title but the first book in the series is now going to be called...

Deadly to Love
(Elemental Killers)

I have finally finished the description as well! (although it may change slightly before release)

Description

There is a love that is so dangerous, so powerful, so intoxicating that it embraces your heart and smothers your mind until it leaves you defenceless.

Serena knew that but still, it didn't stop her. His name was Kai. He was the most beautiful, irresistible man she had ever encountered. Their attraction was too compelling to fight and she knew she would go to the end of the world beside him. That is love.

However behind the allure was hidden a deadly secret – a secret that threatened her fragile life... But secrets best left unsaid never remain hidden forever. When Kai reveals his true identity, she is exposed to a frightening world she had no idea existed. Controlled by powerful Elemental forces her life is placed in mortal danger.

Unbeknown to them, their lives have been entwined from the beginning and it leads her to discover an even greater secret about who she really is. As the pieces begin to unravel and death becomes a reality, Serena is forced to decide what is more important...her love or life.

A cover reveal will be held on 25th November here and on some other blogs which I will link to. If you want to take part in the reveal contact me by the form on my 'contact page' and I will send you the details. The book will be released shortly after that (I will release the date at a later stage).

New Series Update

I'm so excited for the release of the first book in my new series! The editing process is nearly complete, the covers for all four books are complete (even though I have only written 1 at the moment,  I have planned the rest) and the description is nearly finished.

Yesterday I spent seven hours writing and re-drafting the description. I knew it was hard but I didn't think it would take so long. I mean I could have written 2 to 3 chapters in that time but it is important so even though I felt like giving up (or throwing my laptop across the room in frustration) I continued and picked it up again today. I will be posting it here as soon as it is finished so keep checking for back to find out what my new romance novel with paranormal aspects is about.

I have also changed the title which caused me to have to change the covers but I like what I have now better.Originally I was going to call the books The Elementals, however I am now using this as the series title and not the main one. You will have to wait until the description comes out though to find out the new title is though as I'm not going to reveal it just yet =) All I am going to post about the book is:

The Elementals  - Beautiful, Majestic and Deadly

Due to be released by the end of November

Guest post by Author Amre Cortadino

Today I have author Amre Cortadino who has kindly written something for my blog. Her book Valley of the Shadows: Kingdom of Hillael is out now on Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble and is a historical fantasy adventure. Check it out as it sound like a great read!

So everyone please give a warm welcome to Amre!

After writing papers and reading children's books for many years, I sat at the computer one day and, literally, two months later, all 500+ pages of "Valley of the Shadows: Kingdom of Hillael" were completed. See what happens when a parent says, are you daydreaming again? HA! I hope my book inspires an adventure in every reader; I also hope it inspires every dreamer to write.

Published by Merry Heart Ink, the first in a series of fantasy novels involving adventure, mystery, drama, and romance has been released.

Portland, OR – Valley of the Shadows: Kingdom of Hillael, captures the essence of today’s struggles: fear, uncertainty, and betrayal. In this novel, the ageless theme of good versus evil is as current as a page from today’s news.

Cousins Claire and Barloe had almost forgotten the enchanting adventures their Aunt Mim told them of as little girls. Her tales always began with, "Long ago in a faraway land..."

…A priceless treasure, meant to forge an accord between the kingdoms of the KinKades and the Kaebreans, was taken. Betrayed, the enraged KinKades warred against Kaebrea and slaughtered its inhabitants. Though victorious in battle, the KinKades failed to recover their cherished offering. Their consuming hatred eventually transformed the KinKades into a secretive, mythical, feared society – the Shadows. Bordering both countries, Hillael vowed to remain neutral and accepted all survivors. Secure within a prosperous nation, life in Hillael flourished. But now, conspiring to become King of Hillael, the ambitious, self-serving Rokhana forms an evil pact with the Shadows. An epic battle of good versus evil begins as Prince Gildeon ascends to the throne of Hillael.

Paraphrasing a portion of the beloved 23rd psalm, King Dantekar passionately proclaims: “...Never fear evil... Never. Conquer. Rise above.”

Affectionately known as VOTS, this intriguing fantasy novel is being sold on Amazon in paperback and eBook versions, and eBook on Barnes and Noble. A pdf and audio version (in the author’s voice) will be sold at the website given below. ...get VOTS!

Amre Cortadino, the author’s pen name, pays homage to her rich heritage. Her paternal grandmother (Corti) raised 12 children during the depression (her husband passed away shortly after their last set of twins was born). Amre’s maternal grandfather’s name, Palladino, was altered at Ellis Island and is therefore lost to history...

For Amre, growing up in small town America during the 1950s was a magical place to learn and draw from. Amre has been blessed with the beliefs, values and drive that come from sitting on the front pew of a small church in an even smaller town in NJ. One of three children born to a milkman and an accordion teacher, from large Italian families, God, family and friends were the mainstay of existence. Throughout grammar school and high school, every occasion had been celebrated by parades, school plays, Sunday School picnics, and tons of family. Married 30+ years, with four children and two grandchildren, Amre infuses her faith, friendships, humor, previous business and life experiences in her passion for writing. Some of Amre’s previous opportunities include home-schooling her four children, one of whom is autistic/pervasive developmental disorder; medical transcription; a bachelor’s degree in health science; and certifications and service as a childbirth educator (ICEA) and lactation consultant (IBCLC). Keeping chickens is also one of Amre’s pastimes.

For more information about Valley of the Shadows: Kingdom of Hillael, please visit www.valleyoftheshadows.net. For interviews and book signings, please email Amre at amrecortadino@valleyoftheshadows.net.

Thank you Amre and Good Luck with your book!

Images For New Novel 2

So I know I should be editing and re-drafting my new book as it is being released very soon and I'm already putting together cover reveals etc but after the day I had I wasn't able to face it. The thought of trawling through page after page was too much and because I knew i wouldn't be able to concentrate it seemed pointless. Instead I decided to edit some more images that helped inspire me with locations for the book as it was a much more relaxing task.

First Draft Complete!

Today I spent at least twelve hours writing. To begin with I told myself that I wasn't allowed to eat lunch until I had completed at least one chapter, which worked out well as I was over target by the time I became hungry. After that I just couldn't stop.

Everything was just flowing easily and I couldn't find a suitable place to stop so I just kept writing and writing. I had five chapters left to write this morning and I had planned to write one everyday over the course of the week. Owell my plans have now changed...

I finished the last line in the first book of my new series two hours ago! I am really excited about this book and can't wait for it to be released. I do however now have to go through the process of editing, cover design, description writing etc some of which I don't mind but others I can't stand.

Other than that I am now waiting for the document to print. "Page 1 of 356..." This is going to take a while and I really should sleep.

Inspiration

Today I wrote 2 chapters, leaving me with only 5 more to write and therefore the first draft will be finished soon as I am going to be writing none stop for the next few days! I also scheduled one one guest post, sent out three and received four books to review. Overall I've had a very busy day and I'm now relaxing with a hot chocolate, my cat and spending time looking through some photos I have taken and edited in the past few years.

I love photography and find it is a great way to de-stress, relax and just get out of the house for a bit. Due to the fact I live in the country-side it is easy for me to wander off around fields and stay out for hours (if the weather allows me) as in the spring/summer everything looks especially nice. Also I love walking through the woods that surround my house during the autumn as with all the leaves changing colour it looks really pretty. The peace helps me to gather my thoughts and come up with new ideas as well.

As I have nearly finished the first draft of my new book, I thought I would share with you some of the pictures that I have used to partially base settings on.

So here are a few:

Trouble With Character Names

I have been struggling to find a name for the leading male in my new series 'The Elemental' the past week. His previous name was Richie and I have written over half the book using that name, but there is something about the name that doesn't seem to fit. Anyway I have been searching through numerous baby name site, with no luck so moved onto name meaning sites but still couldn't find anything that I thought was right.

However last night I was really hungry so when I went to look for something in the fridge I noticed the alphabet magnets stuck to the door. Instead of eating, I sat in front of the fridge rearranging letters for two hours before I finally came up with a name I liked, and fitted with my idea of the character. The only problem now was I had to go back and change all the 'Richies' in my book to the new name, something that took forever when my Open Office doesn't have a replace button. I'll definitely be using the magnets again for other names that I struggle with!

I am also going to be giving a Smashwords code away sometime during the first week in October, to allow you to download The Sheol for free, so keep checking my blog for update as I will be posting about it here.
